As an educator, one of the questions I hear most frequently from parents is: “How do you decide which programs to use with my child?”
With so many reading and language arts curricula on the market—many of them filled with overwhelming workbooks and repetitive drills—it can be tough for parents to separate busywork from genuine learning.
In my practice, I rely heavily on two foundational frameworks: Reading Simplified for beginning readers and Michael Clay Thompson (MCT) for advanced language arts.
At first glance, these two programs seem to serve opposite ends of the learning spectrum. However, under the hood, their underlying philosophy is identical. Here is why this powerful combination works so effectively for our students—and why I’ve trusted it for years.
1. Integrated Learning Over Isolated Busywork
Traditional programs often split language arts into separate, disconnected subjects: phonics, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and writing. This fragments a child’s focus.
Both Reading Simplified and MCT take an all-in-one approach:
- Reading Simplified combines phonemic awareness, letter-sound mapping, blending, and handwriting into single, dynamic routines (like Switch It).
- MCT weaves grammar, academic vocabulary, poetics, and writing together through a single, elegant framework rather than separate workbooks.
2. The Student Does the Thinking
Neither of these methods treats children like passive vessels to be filled with memorized rules. Instead, both frameworks invite the student to be an active investigator.
Rather than handing students a worksheet of fill-in-the-blank sentences, we guide them to discover patterns, analyze word roots, and explore why language works the way it does. This discovery-based learning creates deep understanding that lasts far beyond Friday’s spelling test.
3. Efficiency and Momentum
When instruction is streamlined around clear, repeatable routines, students don’t waste precious mental energy trying to understand complex rules for new games or workbooks. They can spend 100% of their intellectual energy on the language itself. Because the focus is on high-impact concepts, progress happens much faster and with far less friction.
4. Grounded in Authentic Literature
Neither program relies on artificial, dry text snippets. From the very beginning, the goal is to get students reading, analyzing, and appreciating real, continuous text and classic literature. When children engage with meaningful books, they don’t just learn how to read—they learn to love reading.
Years of Proven Success in the Classroom and Home
These aren’t just methodologies I discovered yesterday; they are the backbone of my teaching journey:
- 15+ Years with Michael Clay Thompson: I began teaching with MCT back in 2011. I used it to educate my own four children and have since guided numerous individual tutoring students and small groups through its rich, inspiring levels.
- 4 Years with Reading Simplified: I have been utilizing Reading Simplified for four years with incredible success, watching young readers rapidly bridge the gap between basic letter sounds and confident, fluent reading.
Whether a child is taking their very first steps into reading or diving deep into advanced sentence structure and literature, my mission is always to make language arts meaningful, joyful, and deeply effective.
